Weekly Words To Inspire

Today is the last Monday in August... which can only mean one thing... most of the area kids are experiencing the first day of school. Can you hear that? It's the sound of the mother's rejoicing.  In the honor of the first day of school, here is something that I thought was fantastic for everyone to learn.

'Love Letter to the World'

In the face of complaints, look that person in the eye and imagine what it might have been like to be raised to see only what is wrong.
In the face of selfishness, wonder what it might be like to walk the world with a feeling of lack, of depletion.
In the face of insults, consider where this person first learned that it’s okay to abuse others.
In the face of disconnection, think about what causes it, and ask if your response will widen the river between the two of you.
In the face of laziness, recognize the fear of living big dreams.
In the face of extremism or fundamentalism, see the clinging, as well as the terror-filled silence that would arise for that person if they risked letting go.
In the face of controlling behavior, understand the chaos that must have bred it.
In the face of “always needing to be right,” see how often this person was once made wrong.
In the face of arrogance or bravado, hold gently that still, small piece that says “I’m not enough.”
In the face of drama or attention-seeking, see the person who wishes so much to be seen.
In the face of accusation, imagine what it might be like to live life with suspicion.
In the face of judgement or comparisons, step into the opportunity the world has just provided you for practicing love and acceptance.
In the face of passive-aggressiveness, recognize the child that wasn’t taught a safe way to express their truth.
In the face of anger, see the pain of isolation from others.
Most importantly: In the face of ferocious hatred, believe in the possibility that there exists the potential for equally as big, intense, lovely and fiery ferocious love.

Gotta light?

I have become hugely addicted to Pinterest. I found this awesome project made with old matches:

I got to thinking that I had some old matches that I took from my grandparents farm. They were not your ordinary matches, they were hysterical, comical match boxes. So I 'pinned' this project and then went to work.

I had this frame that I bought that was on sale and used a coupon. I think it ended up being like $2.00

I removed the junk on the inside. I was first going to use scrapbook paper for the background, but that would have caused a line. After pondering it for a few moments, I decided that I had some Pennysaver paper laying around and the wanted section would be perfect! So that's what I did.

I lade them out to make sure they would fit.

Then took some up close pictures.

I know it's blurry. Do you see 'Infernal Revenue Department?' or how about ' Last Chance Morticians?'

I used some tape glue to attach them. As the back of the matches are just as funny and I did not want to permanently ruin them.

Kind of neat, eh?
Total cost was around $2.00 and about 20 minutes. Whoot!

Thank you Pinterest!

Weekly Words To Inspire

Can you believe how far into August we have travelled?! I can't. I'm shocked.

A little update about the weekend. I attempted and finished the 10k in Erie on Sunday. The weather conditions were less than ideal for me. When we left the house the humidity was 97% and was raining.... it rained until a little after mile 1, I believe. Then the sun came out..... When we returned home it was 77%. My lungs still aren't right from the Whooping Cough. I was doing a pretty solid run up until about mile 2. My legs felt good, I was mentally doing good, then my lungs decided to be crappy and my asthma symptoms started. By mile 3 I was wheezing pretty good. I should have stopped, but I didn't. It wasn't easy, but I finished. I finished in 1:07. I know that I could have been under an hour if my lungs didn't suck. So I'm hoping for under an hour for The Great Race in September (as long as the humidity isn't around). The good news is my legs don't hurt today! Whoop!

Here are some words....

You don’t have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things – to compete. You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals.

One thing is for certain: There will be one thing that will dominate your life. I strongly suggest it be something you can be proud of.

Fantastic Friday - New Book, Must Read!

If you ever talk to any of my family you will NEVER hear them say what a reader I am or how enthralled she gets into the classic books. As disappointing as it is (we have a family history of true book readers) most classics cannot grasp my attention and therefore, lose me. However, every once in a while, there is a book that I start and I cannot put down. I loved this book so much that I do have to share.

On Tuesday morning I get an e-mail from my sister-in-law that a friend's book was published and we should check it out. She sent some information about the book and it seemed to be a legit book. So I said, 'What the hey' and downloaded it. Let's just say, I read it in less than 12 hours. 304 pages. Less than 12 hours. I read it every chance I got. The book was amazing. Nothing I could write could do this justice so I'm going to copy you the summary from Amazon and let you read it. All I'm going to say is that if you are searching to have a relationship like those little old couples have that still hold hands, read this book. If you want to see an amazing bond grow between a grandma and her granddaughter, read this book. If you want to read a book about falling in love, read this book.

Here's the official summary:

"An endearing and unforgettable memoir of love, self-discovery, and enduring, old-fashioned values

Kristine Gasbarre made a New York career of dating driven, inaccessible men. When she realizes her love life will never result in happiness if she continues on the same path, she makes a big decision—relocating to Italy to discover her roots and find out what defines her adoring grandpa. But upon receiving the news of his sudden passing, she is lured away.

With nowhere left to go, Krissy returns to her small hometown for the first time in a decade to help care for her grandmother—a refined, private matriarch suffering from early dementia along with the loss of her husband. In her reluctant agreement to share the nearly lost love stories and transformative lessons from her rich sixty-year marriage, Krissy’s grandma becomes the one offering comfort as she coaches her granddaughter through the fear of loving. Grandma’s unapologetic femininity and secret giving spirit opens Krissy’s eyes about relationships, teaching her the single most important requisite for loving a man: first a woman has to learn the power of her own inner beauty. "

The book is called ' How to Love an American Man: A true story' by Krstine Gasbarre.

So if you are looking for anything to read, totally give this a shot.

Rumor on the streets about this book:
A. Better than Eat, Pray, Love (I'd have to agree, rather than flying all over the Earth, she finds herself from the wisdom of her Grandma Glo. Doesn't get much better than that for me!)
B. It's going to be a movie (read it before it's a movie!)

If you read it, let me know! I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Have a great weekend!
First 10k on Sunday! AHHHHHH.

Take it easy.

My List

Let’s make a deal. Shall we?

Let’s make a deal to stop being mediocre. I’m kind over that. I’m over people not living up to their talents. It really is time to get things right. It’s always got to start with figuring out what you want.

So here’s my list:

Buy a house with a Garage
  • Ultimately end up in Farm House.
    • I’d like to have:
    • Chicken Co-op
    • Garden
Pay Off my Car
  • Ultimately end up with my car and a 4 Wheel Drive truck
    • I’d like to have:
    •  a quad (or two)
    • A bench seat truck from the 80’s or earlier.
To be in the best shape of my life.
  • Ultimately I want to do 10 pull ups and 25 push ups
    • I’d like to continue to run races and complete a half-marathon
 Quit my job
  • Ultimately I’d love to be a full-time crafter that reuses materials and creates awesome things
    •  I’d like to put my time and effort into something I’m passionate about.
I want to travel

  • Ultimately I’d love to go to Italy
    • I’d love to:
    • travel to Asia and South America
    • take a train across the U. S.
    • take a boat from Europe to NYC.
    • Go somewhere new every year.

 Financially Independent

  •  Ultimately I will never rely on a credit card
    • Car should be paid off by February of 2013
    • Student loan debt by 2015
    • Credit Card paid off by July 2012
    • Comfortable savings account
    •  Financial Freedom
As for my life, I want to live simply and have a great love.
  • Ultimately I want to live the life I have always dreamed of
    • I’d like to
    • inspire people to do the same
    •  never sacrifice who I am
    • never forget what I’ve gone through/where I'm from
This list will always be a work in progress. It’s supposed to be high-level but also achievable. It might not be this year, but this is my goal in life. This is my focus I’m going to stop settling and start working for what I want. I got into the habit of just walking meaninglessly through life. Times they are a changing.

It’s said that we are more likely to achieve our goals if we right them down. So here it is. These are my goals. In black and white. On the internet no less, which means they will always be somewhere. It’s up to me to reach these goals.

Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’

-Shawshank Redemption

What’s on your list? Write it down. Make it happen.
Stop waiting to win the lottery.
Stop waiting for it to come to you.
Go out and do it.
Just Do It.

Year Review

‘It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.’ – Walt Disney

On Sunday, I did something I had NEVER done before, I ran for 7.58 miles, which means I was running for over an hour (I took a 15 minute break to talk to my Brother-In-Law at church), but regardless, pretty impressive for me.

While on my run, I felt great, my legs felt good, for the first time in over a year, my lungs actually felt good and I was just smiling away. Life was good. I got to thinking about the past year… and what a year it has been….

So let me recap some of the highlights….

August 2010

I threw myself fully into Jazzercise. Finding not only a workout that I loved, but friends that enjoyed similar interests. I have been Jazzercising for a year and it is an activity that I can foresee me doing well into the future. Who doesn’t want an opportunity to dance without mirrors?!

September 2010

Vacation with two incredible friends and male… who meets his love… Mexico from 2010 will always hold a special place in my heart. I met a ton of fabulous people on the trip. I had an absolutely fantastic time with two of my closets friends and I got to watch the beginning of an amazing and inspiring relationship.

October 2010

I got diagnosed with Whooping Cough, so that wasn’t the best thing ever, but that weekend I went camping with my family. We had such an awesome time. I made (assisted) my brother a sweet superman cake for his 30th birthday.

November 2010

I got really sick in November. Pretty much whenever I did an activity during November I coughed. So I maintained my lifting. I pretty much stopped Jazzercise.

I took my parents to see ’The 39 Steps’ at the City Theater. It was a play that I had seen in NYC and I couldn’t wait for my parents to see it. We had a lovely evening. I was also able to see my Godchild for her 2nd birthday. We had a great weekend of hanging out and playing and just being silly. Thanksgiving was another successfully family gathering.

December 2010

I started back to Jazzercise and Running. I had set a date with my Sister and Mom and we went to see ‘A Sister’s Christmas’ again at the City Theater. We capped off the evening by having dinner downtown at Tavern 245 with the whole family for my Mom’s birthday. Then I stayed after my sister’s family and we went to see the Christmas decorations around downtown. Christmas was a nice refreshing family get together. It’s so fun watching the kids getting all excited for Santa’s gifts.

January 2011

January started off amazingly. I went on a trip to NYC with my Aunt, Cousin, Sister-In-Law and cousins best friend. We saw a few shows, all of which were amazing, however… I was able to see NATHAN LANE, LIVE ON STAGE! How amazing is that? We also saw Mary Poppin’s (on Broadway), Avenue Q (off Broadway), and Addam’s Family (on Broadway, starring Nathan Lane!). We had such a fabulous time in NYC. It was a great way to start the New Year! I was also able to resume working out. Until I got sick again.

February 2011

I was fairly sick through most of February. But I refused to let my sickness get me down. I took the appropriate amount of time for resting and to get better. For the first time after I was sick, I felt better. I also managed to begin watching the entire series of Roseanne, thanks Netflix!

March 2011

I felt good in March, I was crafting, I was beginning to work out, I was feeling better. I celebrated St. Patty’s Day Pittsburgh style with a great friend before she went off to Ireland. I visited my GodChild. I began refocusing on my words to live by for 2011: Balance and Free.

April 2011

I celebrated my birthday! I had family and friends come in for my last weekend in Pittsburgh for a while. I had a fabulous evening and couldn’t ask for any better! The following weekend I headed down to Charlottesville, VA, to hang out with some family. It was such an amazing trip. Then I got sick, again. But that didn’t stop me from going to Cleveland the following weekend to attend a Bridal Shower and Bachlorette party, which was a blast. The next weekend I attended a Halfway to Halloween party with my old roommate. The next day we attended my first Playoff hockey game. It was a horrible game, but I was excited none-the-less. I ended April on high note as I completed my first 5k in 27:30, which I didn’t think was that bad considering the illnesses I had been facing.

May 2011

May was a hugely busy month. My family camped together in honor of Mother’s Day. There were shirts that were made, awards given out, and plans to go to my brother’s for Memorial Day! The next weekend I attended a baby shower in Erie, where I committed to running a 10k in August. Following that I went with my Old Biddies to Detroit and had the absolute time of my life. Then I went to my Brother and Sister-In-Law’s over Memorial Day to assist in installing a fence. It was another great family gathering!

June 2011

I start June off with helping host a Bridal Shower for one of my great friends. Right after the shower I drove 3 hours to attend a wedding with the God Father of my God Child. My Best Friend, her husband, the God Father, and I had a wonderful evening sitting by the fire in the middle of No-where-ville-PA. The next day we spent building things with our hands and taking a quad ride around an apple orchard. I was in Heaven. For the first time in a really long time, I finally felt that this where I needed to be with my life. The next weekend I had a sleep over with my Nephew due to my niece’s surgery. We went to the Art’s Festival and then hung out with a Couple and their 5 year old. We had a fabulous day. He was so excited. 3rd weekend in June brought me back to Charleston, WV. My birth place. I spent a weekend with my cousin and we went to the FestivALL in downtown. We had such a great time. It was so nice to be able to spend some time with family. It was a beautiful drive and an excellent time. I was in Heaven. I then headed back down to WV the following weekend to visit with my Aunt and see my Cousin’s new house. Another weekend spent with family. Another weekend I would never change. I also took a dear friend to his first visit to the Rex to see Joe Purdy. If you haven't seen Joe, you need to, he is an unbelievable artist. I rounded out June by attending Pretty in Pink at a local theater dressed in my prom dress! Whoop!

July 2011

July started off with a wedding for my old roommate in Cleveland. I saw people I hadn’t seen in years and we just had a ball. It was a great night. The next weekend was filled with an Alumni Football game and seeing a bunch of friends from High School, oh what a blast. The next day I went Pole Dancing for a Bachlorette Party for the first time and fell in love with it. We had a Bachlorette Party that night and celebrated the life of my good friend and wished her nothing but the best in her married life. The 3rd weekend brought a happy hour with amazing people finished by meeting my Aunt at my place so she could stay over, for the Steeler’s Women’s Training Camp! That was a day that I will never forget, no matter how long I live. I finished it off by going to a fellow Jazzerciser’s party! It was an incredible day. I don’t think I stopped smiling, even when I slept!

My God Child visited the next weekend, where we attended a Pirate’s Game (they were actually winning at this point), went to the Children’s Museum and enjoyed each other’s company. I was also able to see U2 at Heinz Field which was their last US show on the 360 tour. I finished July by attending Breakfast at Tiffany’s with 9 other ladies dressed like Audrey Hepburn. What an experience! The last Saturday was sent seeing The Band Perry, Luke Bryan, and Tim McGraw. The concert was AMAZING!

August 2011

August kicked off with a bang with being in the wedding of a great friend. It was a Friday wedding and it was a great night. Sunday I attended a baby shower for my cousin and was able to visit with some relatives I haven’t seen in a very long time. Most importantly I got to see my cousin’s belly!!!!!!! Yyyayyy! This past weekend I spent with the kids. We had a sleep over Friday which meant we went to a Laser Show on Friday night at the Carnegie Science Center and saw The Beatles. We watched 20some episodes of the original Pink Panther (Thanks Netflix!) and painted pottery and played on an ‘ ALL WOOD PLAYGROUND’ as they kept repeating. We had a fabulous weekend together. Sunday I spent at my parents house, running and hanging out, then finished the day having dinner with some friends.

I have had a year filled with firsts, family, and friends. I could have not asked for anything more this past year. I am going to continue to challenge myself to experience, to feel, to learn, and grow. All to often we get way too comfortable with how things are going. Fight that. Change that. Life is meant to be lived, not to be walked through carefully. We only have one life and we might as well make the most of it while we can. So surround yourself with the people that love you, do things which awaken you, and believe that anything is possible.

This year has proved to me that life is all of what we make of it. So make it a good one.

Weekly Words To Inspire

Well, here it is for me. The final week before my first 10k! So today I'm sending out thoughts on doing the impossible. When I committed to this race, this was going to be an impossible feat. However, after running 7.58 miles yesterday (!) in Washington, I have no doubt that I can run the whole thing. I'm just hoping I can get it under 1:15.

When are you going to attempt the impossible? What's stopping you?

Fantastic Friday

Have a 'Meek' friend isn't always a bad thing, here's why!

So I have to tell you about the greatness that entered my life this week. One of my friends, who has a garden (and a blog!), needed some inspiration. So I stated, in my own way, that I would buy a basket of farm veggies from them. Well...... it just so happens the Mrs. was going to be in the area this week. So she stopped by and brought me this:

I was soooooo excited. If you look closely you can still see dirt. Just the way I like it!
So my plan was originally, I was going to cook some pasta and since I already had cooked Salmon, that I would just cut some veggies with the pasta and Salmon. Well, that went out the window, I wanted to taste them, now. I'm an instant gratification girl, what can I say? So instead of pasta.. I made this...

Flatbread-whatever-thingy, with Salmon, Tomato's, Cucumber, and Squash. Then just a little Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It was amazing. Like unbelievable and so easy. So delicious. So refreshing. So summery.

Dear Meeks',
Thank you for the food. It was delicious.
With Love,
Eates-A-Lot's Taste Buds

In other news, I'm taking the kiddo's tonight to see a Beatles Laser Show and then we are having a sleep over. Should be a very good time. This means I'll be spending the rest of the weekend recovering from the sleep over!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Snow in Pittsburgh... In August?!

Most of you probably don't know that Batman is being partically filmed in Pittsburgh. Let's just say, we are quiet a proud city of this.  Today, during my morning run, I started by seeing all the signs to direct the crew to parking. I started to get giddy. (I was also kicking myself for not taking my camera.)

Long story. I ran, a few miles and at the start of mile 4 I saw all these cop cars (like 30) parked in a parking lot. I thought to myself, seriously, what police department was stupid enough to leave their cars in the Strip District over night.' Then as I rounded a corner I saw ' Gotham PD.' It then, made sense.

The biggest news today is that it's August 10 and it snowed in Pittsburgh! Yup. They have shut down a street (a street I typically run down) and they made it snow overnight.

I'm not going to lie, it's pretty awesome that Pittsburgh is becoming ' Little Hollywood.'

Golly I love this city.

Tricycle Diaper Baby Shower Gift

Last weekend I attended my Cousin’s Baby Shower. Which means I spent the Saturday AFTER being in a wedding making a Diaper Tricycle, this had success written all over it.

So after I drag myself out of bed and then off the couch I decided that I should make it at my parents house, as it probably wouldn’t survive a trip in my car. So hot mess and all, I went to Target and Rite Aid (I had some killer coupons for Diapers!).

What I bought:
2 36 Jumbo Packages of Diapers
1 set of 3 bibs
1 Bath Towel
1 Pair of Socks
1 Dishwasher Basket
1 set of 3 bottles
1 package of Ribbon.

What I my parents had:
1 Zip tie
2 Wire Hangers
1 Paper towel center
Some string
Some tape
Rubber bands (I’d suggest ones that aren’t dried out and old)

So this is what I did.
I googled ‘ Diaper Tricycle Frugal’ and it found the Tricycle that Frugal with a Flourish (Thanks Jess!!!!!!) had de-constructed.

I semi-read the instructions. I figured, I had that as a reference and I’d test myself to see how amazing I really was.
I ended up following the steps pretty close to how Jess has discovered hers was made however I did have some changes.

When making the back axel, instead of putting napkins over the ends, I used bottles. Which required me to cut the tube. I then stuffed the bottles in the ends.  (I did attempt to 'tape' the bottles on, but that was a wasted effort.)

When attaching the dishwasher basket to the axel, I used string to attached it. I haven’t decided if this was a smart move or not, but my rubber bands weren’t fresh and it was annoying me. (Note: Lack of pictures are due to my infactuating with Dance Mom's. What a trainwreck.)

I made the handle bars per the instructions. The only thing I would caution you about is to make sure that your towel/blanket is big enough. I thought mine was, but in reality after you cross the wire, it magically becomes short. That is a problem. Luckily I bought big songs so I could kind of hide the fact the towel didn’t make it up to the ends. Live and learn, right?

The last modification I did was instead of using ribbon to connect the front to the back, I actually used a White Hanger and curled the end around the paper towel roll. Basically, I looked at the instructions and said, ‘Yeah, I’m not patient enough for that.’ So this was my idea. I did like it. I thought the wire running back made it look more like a tricycle.

Once that was finished all I had to do was put a bib on the front.

I didn’t put the pacifier on the front, because honestly, I forget to pick on up at the store. I know, fail.

If you have any questions, let me know.

I would also suggest not making this when it’s really humid as my diapers got kind of got funky.

Weekly Words To Inspire

I don't know about you, but I had an absolutely incredibly awesome weekend. I spent Friday being part of an amazing couples wedding and Sunday I spent celebrating my cousin's new son Gage (ETA: October).
And now the week begins... dom dom dom.

Hopefully these will get us through the next couple of days! Be prepared, I believe these are all top notch.

Enjoy!

'This is a brick wall.
It is in your way.
You can climb over it.
Or you can tunnel underneath it.
Or kick it down.
Or try to walk around it.
Or you can sit down in front of it and weep bitter, life-is-not-fair,
brick wall-hating tears.

But let's be honest:
When you cry, your mascara runs,
and so does your nose,
and your eyes get red and puffy,
and when you are done,
that brick wall will still be there,
in your way.

But the choice is yours.

Redneck Wedding

I've been meaning to post this for months. Life has gotten me crazy. Anyways, here are some pictures from a wedding I went to in June. Mind you, this was in PA, a state where they do make fun of southerners.

This was the brides shoes.... now that isn't to bad, but I must set the scene. The wedding took place at an old mansion over looking the mountains. Breath taking. However, the couple working in camo every chance they could get. For instance, the table cloth to perform the sand ceremony.... camo.... The ribbon around the cake... camo... They even had little statues of them made that were dress in hunting gear (camo with the orange safety vests & shot guns)

Here is a picture of the Father of the Bride's shoes...
Yes that's camo there...

This was their ride to the reception..
Yes those are empty shotgun shells...

This is where I became utterly speechless. I was the date of one of the groomsmen. He had told me that he was wearing camo. I didn't think much of that... Camo vests can be common. However, my best friend's husband was in the wedding and quickly elaborated on 'camo.' Nothing could have prepared me for this..

The top of the pockets were camo, along with the ties. They also had to buy pleated black pants. Lucky for the guys they actually had to BUY the jacket and pants.  I laughed, at that point, it's all you can do.
And I'm teased because I'M from West Virginia. However, none of my family weddings have EVER compared to this... EVER.

Hope you enjoyed.
